Faux Abalone With EasyCast

This is the fifth gemstone I recreated with EasyCast:  Abalone.
Isn't it gorgeous!
If you have been following the blog I am using recipes designed by Marie Browning to create gemstones with EasyCast.  You can find all these recipes here.
To create Faux Abalone you need to review yesterday's blog on how to make a Faux Opal.  You follow the basic opal making procedure.
You top the mold cavity with a layer of mixed EasyCast coloured with Castin'Craft Black Opaque Pigment.
Let cure.  Then pop out the new gemstone!

I hope you enjoyed this week of gemstone making.
I would like to wish everyone a safe and relaxed long weekend.
Let's hope Mother Nature is kind.

  1. What do you do (if anything) about the little dimples that are left on the resin when using jewelry molds - makes me crazy!

  2. I have only had one dimple...when one of the items I encased dropped to the bottom of the mold and blocked the resin from covering it. When I need to make sure the mold turns out perfect, I pour my resin in and let is start to gel a little for 20-30 minutes. Then when I add inclusions, they are less likely to create a dimple. As you can see from the abalone molded sample...not single blemish!

  3. I'm actually talking about the little dimples that occur because they are actually in the mold. They are just little dots that I guess are formed from the molding process - if you hold the molds up to light, you can actually see them and I find that they can be felt after the casting too. They aren't very noticeable but they still make me crazy. Maybe I'm the only one who worries about them - haha. Thanks - love your blog!

  5. I never saw any dimples in my castings with these molds. I do have to re-coat them with resin after casting though, to get the shine I like. Just gorgeous! I've got your gems siblings, in a container somewhere...you inspire me to find 'em and do something wonderful! Thank SO much for your awesome blog. Good stuff.

  6. I took a closer look at the mold and now I see the little dimples! Clearly, they were not noticeable to me. Now, I'll see them every time!
